A Decade of Wedding Photography
They say, we're wandering through the years... and it's been ten since we decided to enter the photography realm professionally. Wait, did we just say ten years? Somehow, it's true... It just seems like an exceptionally large amount of time. When we began in 2009, Britney had some experience as a second shooter photographing weddings. I on the other hand, as a shy, introverted young man, had nothing to go on but guts and the hope that one day we could turn this into something more encompassing of a vocation. The very first wedding I photographed was pure terror for me. I remember sitting in our Jeep with my camera in hand, second guessing everything. Now that I think about it, despite my interest in photography up until that point, I don't think I ever actually owned a camera. I remember my hands shaking from nervousness, trying to psych myself up for this eight hour affair with people I had spoken to just once or twice, and a venue full of their family and friends waiting inside. The thought of standing in front of a crowd, a group, or even just the couple themselves was nerve racking. Not only because crowds were daunting to me, but because I had very little idea about what I was doing. It felt like the first day of a new important job where perhaps you embellished on your resume a little during the application process, and when you arrive for your first day, you quickly realize you could be in over your head. In our case, we were responsible for the whole company, there were no do-overs, no 'tomorrow's another day' mentality. There was only one shot at this. I was going into this solely based on the fact that I knew I could compose a good photograph, and come up with some interesting shot ideas, which up until that moment seemed like an acceptable start. The creative side was there, it was just the technical side that needed training and fine tuning. Thanks to Britney's experience and confidence, I was able to hit my stride somewhere mid way though the shoot, and things actually went relatively well. Britney's Fine Arts Degree in photography provided us a solid base to kick this whole idea into gear, and following her lead over those first couple of years was crucial for me in becoming what I now consider a professional photographer.
Today, perhaps more than ever, we are excited and feeling really engaged in the upcoming 2020 wedding year. We're looking forward to booking more couples locally here in the lower mainland, while still traveling this beautiful province of British Columbia to capture others.
Below is a part one of a small compilation of photos through the years. From Ontario where we began, to our current home of New British Columbia. Join us as we look back in this three part series. From rustic backyard weddings, crowd pleasing receptions at brew pubs, elegant affairs at the Empress Hotel in Victoria, coastal beach weddings in Tofino, Sooke, and Parksville, and "knot-tying" in the city, we have an extensive photographic journey to cover. So for all you couples out there looking to book for the 2020 year, we hope this gives you some insight into us as photographers. To all of our past couples, thank you so much for being a part of the journey so far. We hope from time to time, you still look us up to check things out, but most of all we hope you enjoyed our time together, and are still enjoying your photos.
